For over half a century, perhaps even longer, Lichfield has been without any new public sculpture, but now it will soon happen as part of a £70,000 cash injection.
Designs for a bronze sculpture, titled "The Formation of Poetry" created by Society member Peter Walker, are expected to be part of the Samuel Johnson Tercentenary Sculpture Project, and will be on show soon. The sculpture, which has been designed with the help of art students from the Friary High School, will be the first of three sculptures planned for 2010-2011.
A Community arts project, planned for the City throughout 2009 will be part of the celebrations culminating in the Johnson birthday celebration week-end, next September.Members will recall seeing Peter's bronze sculpture "Icarus" during our Autumn exhibition, and we congratulate Peter on this very important commission. Our Society will also be contributing to these celebrations, and details will be published in the New Year.

THE PAINTING EVENING ‘MASTER CLASS’
Colin Clifton ran the first of our acrylic ‘Master Classes’ at the October painting evening. We were joined by 9 members for this trial run, which was a great success. None of the group had used acrylics before and had a great time learning new techniques. The ‘students’ were very quick to raise hands for ‘can we do more please’. So, with the agreement of Colin, the master classes will continue to run alongside the members’ painting evenings for the next six sessions. Our next date is 26th November 2008, 7.30pm – 10.00pm.
We can take up to twelve members at one time and we already have six places reserved. If you want to join in the next session, see Jan Leytham-Gain at the November demo evening and give her your £2 deposit or phone either Jan on 01543 252122 or Colin on 0121 353 6296 to reserve your place.
PLEASE remember, if you DON”T want to do the master class you can still come along with your own artwork for the usual £1 for the evening, that includes tea, coffee and bics for everyone! We look forward to seeing you there.
Got any suggestions of what media you’d like to try? Talk to Jan Leytham-Gain and she’ll see what we can do for a Master Class for you!
